The Department of Medicine sponsors an eight-week Internal Medicine Clerkship. This opportunity is only available for students currently enrolled in the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. During the clerkship, students gain exposure to a broad range of illnesses cared for by Internal Medicine Physicians in an inpatient setting.

Students spend four weeks at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and four weeks at one of our affiliated academic community hospitals. In addition to the clinical experiences, students participate in a comprehensive didactic curriculum comprised of hands-on physical diagnosis sessions, small group sessions that teach clinical reasoning, small group lectures, hands-on ABG and EKG sessions, and medical jeopardy. In addition, students hone their medical literature review skills by participating in an EBM project. The breadth of students’ clinical exposure is closely monitored throughout the clerkship to ensure that each student achieves the educational objectives. Both faculty and house staff receive training on student teaching and evaluations, and receive annual feedback on their teaching skills.

The Department of Medicine hosts a large number of clinical experiences for the fourth year medical students, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. These rotations range from formal sub-internships to electives in all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. They can be completed either at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, at one of our academic community affiliates, or at one of our community ambulatory sites. While the sub-internships are only open to SKMC students, elective experiences are open to any fourth year medical student who would like a chance to rotate at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
