Welcome to the Division of Nephrology at Thomas Jefferson University's Department of Medicine.  Our division is dedicated to providing exceptional, patient-centered care from a broad range of kidney conditions, including Chronic Kidney Disease, glomerular diseases such as lupus nephritis, and kidney stones, as well as supporting patients requiring renal replacement therapies like dialysis and kidney transplantation.  We are committed to advancing the understanding and treatment of these diseases through innovative research, clinical excellence, and comprehensive educational programs.

About Us

We are a vibrant, expanding community of experts with a strong reputation for clinical excellence, pioneering research, and outstanding educational opportunities.  Key aspects of our division include:

  • A diverse, dedicated team comprising approximately 15 faculty members, nine fellows, three advanced practice providers, and five administrative staff members.
  • Primary patient care locations at the Honickman Center: and Jefferson University Hospital, with additional ambulatory access at Navy Yard and City Line Avenue.
  • Annually managing over 10,000 clinical visits, providing care for over 300 chronic dialysis patients (including a growing home dialysis population), and performing about 3,000 transplant evaluations and folow-up visits.

Education & Training

We are committed to developing the next generation of nephrology and transplant nephrology leaders through highly regarded training programs.  Our educational offerings feature hands-on experience, lectures, and specialized conferences covering topics such as acid-base imbalances, Acute Kidney Injury, Chronic Kidney Disease, glomerular diseases, and kidney transplantation.  Under the leadership of Dr. Rakesh Gulati, Program Director, and Dr. Omar Maarouf, Associate Program Director, our fellowship programs set a high standard for excellence.  The Transplant Nephrology Fellowship, directed by Dr. Maitreyee Gupta, continues to attract and cultivate top talent in the field.

Research & Discovery

With robust funding and a record of high-impact publications, we are leaders in advancing the field.

Patient Care

We deliver state-of-the-art, collaborative care across various kidney conditions, with renowned programs in dialysis and transplantation consistently achieving national excellence.  Our specialized services, collected in the Honickman Center, include advanced managment of kidney stones and a Comprehensive Hypertension Center for complex cases.
