Program Overview

The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) is an ACGME accredited one-year training program open to trainees who previously completed another internal medicine subspecialty fellowship (e.g. nephrology, infectious diseases, cardiology) and wish to pursue additional training in critical care. At the end of the one-year fellowship the trainee will have acquired the knowledge base and procedural skills necessary to independently practice high quality, evidenced-based critical care medicine in the community, or at an academic setting, and be eligible to sit for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Critical Care Medicine exam and obtain board certification.

Clinical Rotations & Electives

The program is designed as multidisciplinary critical care experience but will have an emphasis on medical critical care. Therefore, the majority of the clinical experience will occur in the medical intensive care units at TJUH or Methodist hospital. Additionally, there are required rotations in the surgical, cardiothoracic and neurological critical care units. Finally, the fellow will be able to choose clinical electives that have a significant focus in critical care, such as, anesthesia, nephrology, palliative care and infectious diseases.

Curriculum

The didactic curriculum covers an extensive range of critical care topics. Conferences include:

  • Weekly multidisciplinary critical care conferences
  • Internal medicine grand rounds
  • Journal club
  • Morbidity & mortality conferences
  • Critical care board review and in-service exam

Procedural Training

Fellows will have the opportunity to become proficient in common critical care procedures including:

  • Central venous catheterization
  • Arterial cannulation
  • Dialysis catheter placement
  • Pulmonary artery catheterization
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Chest tube placement
  • Focused cardiac ultrasound
  • Fiberoptic bronchoscopy
