Overview of Services
The Student Counseling Center (SCC) offers individual counseling, brief treatment interventions, crisis assessments, and referral services to Jefferson students. The SCC also offers group psychotherapy and psychiatric/psychopharmacological services, when clinically appropriate. Counseling and support services are also available for the residents of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) through the Emotional Health and Wellness Program for House Staff. The SCC also sponsors a variety of wellness workshops and health educational seminars throughout the year for students and TJUH residents. The focus of these outreach activities is to provide wellness education, increase awareness of mental health issues, and promote primary prevention and self-care within the Jefferson community.
The SCC seeks to balance the needs of individual students with the needs of the Jefferson community as a whole. This balance implies an emphasis on short-term treatment and referral. While there is no defined session limit, counselors follow a brief treatment model.
Common Concerns
There are many concerns that may lead a student to seek support or counseling. All concerns are taken seriously – no problem is “too small” to talk about. The SCC counselors encourage students to come in and talk, even if they are not sure that counseling is what they need. The important thing to keep in mind is that help is available.
