Repayment Programs
Once you graduate, drop below half-time enrollment, or leave school, your federal student loan goes into repayment unless you are entitled to a grace period, during which payments do not have to be made. For detailed information on your student loan repayment plan options, see the link below. Additionally, you may contact your student loan servicer (i.e., the organization that will be administering your student loan repayment plan) regarding information on when your student loan will come due and what your repayment plan options are.
Federal Direct Consolidation Loan Program
If you have multiple federal student loans, you may be able to combine them into one new loan with a fixed interest rate based on the weighted average of the interest rates on the federal loans being consolidated. A Federal Direct Consolidation Loan allows you to do that at no cost to you.
Through your completion of the free Federal Direct Consolidation Loan Application and Promissory Note, you will confirm the loans that you want to consolidate and agree to repay the new Direct Consolidation Loan. Once the consolidation is complete, you will have a single monthly payment on the new Direct Consolidation Loan instead of multiple monthly payments on the individual loans you consolidated.
Delinquency & Default
A loan becomes delinquent when you do not make a payment by the specified due date.
When you have been delinquent on your loans for a specific period of time (which is dependent upon your loan program), your loan will enter default status. You may incur serious legal repercussions if your loan(s) go into default status.
For detailed information on student loan delinquency and default, visit the link below. Additionally, you may contact your student loan servicer regarding information on student loan delinquency status and default status.
