Strengthening Urban Neighborhood Resilience: Enhancing Household Emergency Preparedness in Philadelphia
- Purpose: This research aims to advance the field of urban household emergency preparedness by developing an operational intervention guide to empower communities and enhance their overall resilience.
- Rationale: Philadelphia is an ideal study environment due to its distinct characteristics, including population density, infrastructure strain, limited green spaces, social vulnerabilities, and economic disparities.
- Goals: The project's objectives encompass three key goals: 1) Comparing household emergency preparedness and barriers to readiness in two geographically different neighborhoods, 2) Creating a video-based intervention to heighten community awareness and build resilience, and 3) Laying the groundwork for comprehensive future research exploring preparedness at the individual, community, and structural levels.
- Project implementation and project deliverables: Project implementation involves two phases.
Phase I entails a comparative analysis of emergency preparedness in two diverse neighborhoods using the Household Emergency Preparedness Instrument (HEPI). Phase II focuses on developing a concise video (or series of short videos) intervention based on HEPI analysis, alongside community engagement, to gather input on the video's effectiveness and suitable modes of communication within the community. This research aims to produce web-based resources and an educational webinar for Jefferson students across disciplines. - Potential funders upon completion: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
