Frequently Asked Questions
How many residents are in each class?
There is one combined pediatrics/PM&R resident per class. There are 28 residents in each general pediatrics class, including four Med-Peds residents and two Peds-Neurology residents. There are seven adult PM&R residents per class.
Where do most residents live?
Most residents start living near the children's hospital in Delaware at the beginning of residency. As you progress through residency, most of your rotations are in Philadelphia, so many residents move closer to Philadelphia for the end of the residency. Most general pediatrics residents live in Philadelphia for their entire three year residency and commute to Delaware.
How far is it between the hospitals in Delaware and Philadelphia?
It is about a 35-40 minute drive (30 miles) between Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia and Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. Christiana Hospital, where delivery room, nursery, and NICU rotations are done, is about 20 minutes south of Nemours in Newark, Delaware. In Philadelphia, Jefferson Hospital and Magee Rehab Hospital are about one mile (15-minute walk) from each other.
Do I need a car?
Yes, you will need a car. While Philadelphia has many options for public transportation, you will have rotations in Delaware, where there are few options.
Do I need to pay for parking?
Nemours Children's Hospital parking in the employee parking garage is free and plentiful. Magee Hospital has a small parking lot, which you can park in for free while on rotation. It is gated and requires your Magee ID badge for entry. Discounted parking is available in Center City Philadelphia at various garages close to Jefferson Hospital. These structures have day or monthly passes available for purchase.
What opportunities are available for elective rotations?
At Nemours, you can do rotations in subspecialty clinics, the most common being radiology, interventional radiology, and palliative care. You can spend time in our gait lab. Nemours also has an in-house prosthetic/orthotic company (Lawall), and the team there is always willing to have residents spend time with them to learn more about bracing and prosthetics.
At Jefferson, residents typically choose to rotate with one of the adult physiatrists specializing in spasticity and baclofen pump management and time with an adult physiatrist specializing in chronic pain. Residents can do rotations outside Nemours/Jefferson if desired, but most choose to stay in-house.
