Grand Rounds

The Department of Family and Community Medicine offers a rich conference program that is held throughout the year. Grand Rounds takes place each Wednesday morning. A variety of local and nationally recognized experts, Jefferson faculty, and third year residents, contribute to these conferences. Third year residents present topics of their choice during Grand Rounds.

An essential component of Grand Rounds is the monthly Morbidity and Mortality conference. Morbidity and Mortality conferences supply one of the great opportunities for residents to synthesize evidence-based literature and apply it to a patient or patients cared for in the hospital. Residents present mortalities and significant morbidities from their Hospital Service block.

Resident Conference

An integral part of the residency is the Thursday Morning conference program. The goal of this program is to provide a didactic curriculum pertinent to family medicine.

Curricular highlights include:

  • Presentations made by upper-year residents, DFCM faculty members, and guest speakers on clinical issues pertinent to Family Medicine, including the development, presentation, and management of problems, both in and out of the hospital.

  • Family Medicine Core Topic Series, which provides monthly, four-hour didactics on an essential primary care topic examined from multiple lenses - review of literature, case-based learning, journal club, and panel management skill development.

  • Education on psychosocial and socioeconomic factors that impact on the health and wellbeing of the individual and family.

  • Outpatient Morbidity & Mortality, a unique spin on traditional hospital Morbidity & Mortality conference. PGY3s provide review of morbidities and mortalities that occurred in the outpatient arena and identify potential areas of improvement in patient care and patient safety.

Morning Report

Morning Report is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays in the Family Medicine office. These conferences are resident-led and designed for case-based learning. In addition to essential primary care topics, recurring Morning Reports topics include maternal child health, sports medicine, geriatrics, and psychosocial health.
