The Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Residency Program in Family Medicine only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We cannot process applications received through any other electronic or paper medium.
All candidates applying to the Department of Family Medicine Residency Program must, as a requirement for application, meet all ABMS Specialty Board-related eligibility prerequisites required to enter training in the related specialty program at Jefferson. Further, all candidates must satisfy the requirements of the State of Pennsylvania Board of Medical Licensure for appointment at the specific level of training for which the position is offered.
In addition, applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible to apply for the Family Medicine Residency Program:
- Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the LCME.
- Graduates of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the AOA.
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who meet one of the following qualifications:
- Have received a currently valid certificate from the ECFMG; or
- Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction.
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
Resident applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation, honesty, and integrity. The program does not discriminate with regard to gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or veteran status. All prerequisite prior training must be successfully completed prior to beginning a residency in the Department of Family Medicine.
Interview Offers
All interviews will be conducted virtually during the 2023-2024 recruitment season. All applications are initially reviewed by the Program Director. The decision to offer an interview to an applicant is made by the Program Director, based on the following criteria:
Applicant has PASSED USMLE Step One;
Adequate communication in the English language;
Dean’s Letter;
Three Letters of Recommendation; and
Successful completion of three years of medical school.
Interviews are conducted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from mid-November through mid-February. Your interview day will consist of time with both faculty and residents. A committee, comprised of faculty and residents, reviews all records and assigns an objective score based on their record. Scores are on a 10-point scale and are assigned for Dean’s Letter, Transcripts, Letters of Recommendation, Personal Statement, Commitment to Underserved Populations, and Extracurricular/Life Experience.

How do I submit an application?
Thomas Jefferson University accepts all applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted in any other form will not be reviewed.
How many positions do you expect to offer?
We expect to offer ten (10) spots for the year ahead.
Does Thomas Jefferson University allow moonlight opportunities for residents?
Opportunities are available for second and third year residents.
Are there USMLE score requirements?
Although scores on USMLE examinations are an important factor in our selection process, there are no official score requirements to apply to the program. In order for an application to be considered, we require that applicants Pass USMLE STEP One. All applicants should have their USMLE STEP Two (CS & CK) completed prior to submitting their match list in February.
Does Thomas Jefferson University Hospital have a requirement in terms of year of graduation?
You must have graduated from medical school within 1 year of application to be considered for interview.
Does the Family & Community Medicine Department at Thomas Jefferson University offer any observership positions?
