Main Clinical Sites
While studying at Thomas Jefferson University, residents will rotate to our affiliated hospitals and Underserved Care Track clinical sites.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
This 700+ bed acute care hospital provides quaternary care for Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The majority of your clinical rotations take place at the hospital and surrounding outpatient offices, including or busy inpatient family medicine service. Given its location in Center City Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital serves patients from a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, which provides our residents with a diverse educational experience.
The Department of Family and Community Medicine is responsible for one of the busiest clinical services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, admitting patients from Jefferson Family Medicine Associates (the Department’s main Center City practice) as well as from satellite practices in the community. We admit patients aged 12+. Inpatient census averages 18 patients per day, and there is currently no cap on the service. As a well-respected team in a collaborative teaching hospital, we have off-service rotators including Jefferson OBGYN interns and anesthesia interns, as well as fourth-year medical students.
Our multidisciplinary rounds include our family medicine team members, as well as pharmacy faculty and residents.
Methodist Hospital
This 200+ bed hospital, located in the heart of South Philadelphia, serves a diverse population that includes a large Italian-American community and a growing number of Southeast Asian immigrants. Interns spend three weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Hospital. This ICU experience more closely mirrors the type of community hospital sites where family physicians manage patients in intensive care.
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a 195 bed pediatric hospital located in Wilmington Delaware. Family Medicine residents in their first and second year of training rotate at duPont to gain competency in inpatient pediatrics. Second-year residents rotate for four weeks in duPont's Emergency Medicine Department. First-year residents rotate for six weeks as part of duPont's Inpatient Hospital Service team, and spend two weeks rotating through duPont's Emergency Medicine Department as well.
