Professional Training

Professional trainings are offered to healthcare professionals to better support individuals with dementia and/or and intellectual disability and their caregivers.

Skills2Care® is an approved BPC dementia caregiving program and within this training, occupational therapists will become certified to administer the Skills2Care®  program.

Skills2Care® is an approved BPC dementia caregiving program. That means it’s passed strict criteria to be included as a top dementia caregiving program within the Best Practice Caregiving database. The database is a free online resource that helps organizations identify, compare and adopt best-fit programs from across the U.S. for their clients and community. Skills2Care® is an evidence-based home program administered by occupational therapists that aims to provide the support and skills required for the caregiver so that they can better support the needs of an individual with dementia. Training for Skills2care ® certification is offered through an agreement with Dementia Collaborative.

Skills2Care® ID prepares Skills2Care® certified occupational therapists  to work with caregivers supporting individuals with ID and dementia. Skills2Care® ID training is offered online twice a year (fall and spring) for occupational therapists who are Skills2Care® certified.

Complete the training components:

  • Pre readings (Completed independently; 2-4 hours)
  • Live Online Instruction and Practice (1 day; 6 hours)
  • Live Online Coaching sessions (5 sessions over the course of 6 months for 5 hours; total of 13-15 hours of training)
  • Deliver Skills2Care®  ID to at least 1 caregiver
  • Present case report and submit Skills2Care® ID documentation during coaching component.

Jefferson’s Innovation Labs provide occupational therapy practitioners with professional development within a supportive online community. Innovation Labs are time-efficient, cost-effective, interactive, and responsive to current trends that influence contemporary service delivery. 

This workshop is designed to provide health professionals and direct support personnel with the knowledge and skills required to meet the needs of people living with dementia and their families with a specific focus on challenging behaviors. 

This package is customized to match the needs of each agency/facility to build mastery of the approaches appropriate to the setting and population. Trainings are offered by occupational therapists who are experts in dementia care and focus to build staff mastery in using a problem-solving approach that generates care strategies and promotes quality of life.

  • Best Practice in Dementia Care-Rehab Professionals: Tailored for physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other rehab professionals.
  • Best Practice in Dementia Care-Hospital Staff: Tailored for nursing, paraprofessionals, and other inpatient hospital staff.
  • Best Practice in Dementia Care-ID: Tailored for professionals and direct support personel supporting people with both dementia and an intellectual disability.
