Supporting Coaching Fidelity for Improved Psychosocial Outcomes in Spinal Cord Injury
Study Overview
The study offers up to 10 free coaching sessions (30-45min/session) for persons with spinal cord injuries or care partners of persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI). The main purpose of this research is the development of a measure to assess how a coach conducts Coaching in Context sessions.
With the Coaching in Context approach, we use intentional conversations to work towards creating solutions for challenges. The challenges are those that interfere with activities that are desired, needed, or expected in daily life. Because the client is recognized as the expert of their own life, the coach does not provide advice or tell the client what to do. Instead, the coach collaborates to figure out what strategies they feel best meet their needs to meet their goals. Coaching has been shown to be highly effective for individuals with and caregivers of individuals with other chronic conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Research About?
Creating a measure to assess how a coach conducts Coaching in Context sessions for persons with SCI and care partners of persons with SCI.
Why is This Important?
There is no measure that evaluates how a coach conducts Coaching in Context sessions for persons with spinal cord injuries and their care partners. The variability in coaching quality and content can adversely affect coaching outcomes.
Who can be in This Study?
The client may be a candidate for the study if:
- 18 years of age or older
- Speak, read, and comprehend English
- Internet access
- Are a care partner (part or full time) to someone with an spinal cord injury (SCI) or have an SCI (3 months or greater since SCI diagnosis)
What Happens if I Participate in the Study?
- Potential participant will meet with the coordinator to gain a better understanding of the study and complete the onboarding process. The participant will need to answer questions about themselves and their quality of life, self-efficacy, depression, anxiety, and positivity.
- The study coordinator will match the participant with a trained coach. The participant and coach will schedule their coaching sessions during a mutually agreed upon day/time. During the first session, the coach will collaborate with the participant to establish goals.
- Participant will complete up to 10 sessions of coaching over Zoom with the coach.
- About halfway through the coaching sessions, the study coordinator will reach out to the participant to check in about coaching and the client-coach relationship.
- After completing all of the coaching sessions, the client will meet with the study coordinator to complete post-questionnaires and study wrap up procedures.

How Long is the Study?
The active study participation (data collection and coaching) will be about 10 weeks. We can accommodate for a longer time if needed.
Is This Study in Person or Remote?
This study is entirely remote, primarily over Zoom.
Who is my Coach?
The study coordinator will determine the coach. All of our coaches are trained coaches with experience in Coaching in Context. Their professional backgrounds may vary, but many of our coaches are also healthcare professionals (e.g., Nurse, Occupational Therapist).
When are the Coaching Sessions?
Schedules can be determined between participants and their coaches. However, coaching sessions are expected to be at least once a week.
