Study Abroad

A key feature of the program is an optional study away component. The MS in Interior Architecture program has partnered with the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PIN), Nantucket, MA, the field school of the University of Florida’s Center for World Heritage & Stewardship and University of Arkansas Rome Center, Rome Italy.

Students in the program join design students from across North America and spend six to seven weeks at DIS, PI:N or UA Rome Center, doing both studio and field work in design and history studies.

Danish Institute for Study Abroad

The Danish Institute for Study Abroad is a high-quality study abroad program established in 1959. All DIS courses are taught in English and provide an opportunity for students to experience new situations and build and develop leadership skills for a globalized world that increasingly requires cross-cultural understanding. DIS is also known for its cross-disciplinary model. You will study and work on projects alongside students from all areas and levels of design and architecture. During the seven weeks in Copenhagen, studio instruction focuses on the process of Interior Architecture as practiced in the Danish tradition and the relationship between conceptual design and its application within existing structures. Denmark serves as a living laboratory for the study of world-renowned Danish design and its history. Students have additional opportunities to join faculty-led field studies in Scandinavia on course-integrated study tour trips.

Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PI:N)

Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PI:N) is a six-week interdisciplinary program that exposes participants to the theories and methodologies of international cultural heritage conservation and the research, documentation, and management of current and potential World Heritage sites. Nantucket and its historic and natural environments serve as a learning laboratory. After 37 years of working with local partners to document and preserve the island’s built environment, the University of Florida and PI:N is leading an effort to nominate the cultural and natural resources of Nantucket to the World Heritage List. The coursework at PI:N is project oriented and students gain hands-on experience in historic preservation from an international perspective while helping conserve the island’s remarkable heritage. Guest lecturers from public agencies and private organizations introduce topics impacting international cultural heritage conservation.

University of Arkansas Rome Center

Through Jefferson’s Partnership with University of Arkansas Rome Center, graduate students can study the tradition of European Design and the city’s rich architectural heritage with local faculty in their field. Design elective courses allow students to gain first-hand experience of the architecture, fashion, culture, art and history of Rome. The Rome Center is located in the historic Palazzo Taverna, minutes from Piazza Navona and students live in Italian apartments near the Vatican. Guest lectures, site visits throughout Rome and the region, and student projects based on local issues and trends support Nexus Learning curriculum. Students can participate in additional excursions with Faculty for in depth tours of important Italian destinations.
