Currently Enrolled F-1 & J-1 Students
Please read the information below carefully if you are planning an international trip while on an F-1 or J-1 visa and enrolled at Jefferson.
Email all your inquiries and questions to your Designated School Official (DSO),
Center City Campus: [email protected]
East Falls Campus: [email protected]
When returning to the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 student status after a temporary absence, carry the following required documents:
- Unexpired passport valid at least six months into the future on the date of your return to the U.S.
- Unexpired F-1 or J-1 entry visa issued by a U.S. Consulate
- Unexpired Form I-20 (for F-1 students) or Form DS-2019 (for J-1 students) with a travel endorsement signature from an Office of International Services (OIS) advisor that is not more than one year old
- Travel signature located on Page 2 of Form I-20 and Page 1 of Form DS-2019
Additionally, it is recommended to carry:
- Evidence of current enrollment as a full-time student at Thomas Jefferson University. Proof of current enrollment can be a printout from Banner
- Evidence of financial ability, such as a copy of your most recent scholarship letter or bank statement
Note:
- F-1 and J-1 students may receive updated I-20s and DS-2019s electronically from the Office of International Services as a downloadable PDF document. However, students must still print out a copy of the PDF and sign their name in ink to show Customs and Border Protection (CBP) when entering the U.S.
- Should you have dependents in F-2 or J-2 status, the list of documents applicable to you above is also applicable to them (minus proof of enrollment). Dependents are permitted to travel internationally without the F-1 or J-1.
Current students and those on work authorization should report their travel destination, departure and return dates, and if a travel signature is required.
If your I-20 or DS-2019 needs an updated travel signature, please submit an online request to the International Services Portal.
When making travel plans, notify the respective offices* for your campus in advance if your plans include time outside of the U.S. for any of these reasons:
- A leave of absence
- An unforeseen circumstance
- A Study-Away or Jefferson-sponsored international travel
- Termination or withdrawal from studies
These situations can significantly impact your F-1 status and your ability to return to the U.S. as an F-1 student. Talk to your DSO if any of these or similar situations apply to you.
Understand the risks of unexpected and sudden delays in returning to the U.S. In the event of a delay or changes to travel dates:
- Resubmit an International Travel Request in the International Services Portal if your return trip to the U.S. is delayed or travel dates have changed
- Inform your academic program and DSO if your return to the U.S. will interfere with your ability to continue your program
