Both inpatient and outpatient rotations are offered for Phase 3. The inpatient experience functions as a formal subinternship in which fourth year students will participate in a higher level of integration into the urology service and will function as an intern in training. The four-week rotation will afford each student in-depth exposure to each urology service and the opportunity to work closely with the residents as an active member of the clinical care team. In addition, students will have the chance to interact with our diverse faculty and to actively explore urology as a specialty choice.
The outpatient rotation is intended to focus solely on clinic interaction with patients as well as office-based procedures. Students will spend at least 80% of the rotation in a urology outpatient clinic working closely with urology residents and providers. They should see a variety of urologic subspecialties and get an appreciation for evaluation and treatment of a patient with a general or specialized urologic complaint.
A virtual rotation is also offered for Phase 3 students. In this course, students will be exposed to general and specialty-specific urologic conditions, along with evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. All learning will be done virtually through lecture and case reports. Additionally, recorded surgical videos and case reports will be available for review. The curriculum will be available through Canvas, and assessment will be via Discussion Board Prompts and Multiple Choice.
Also offered during Phase 3 is a Research Block, which is a month-long rotation.
Students will work with a pre-identified mentor on a defined project. Contribution toward an academic product (abstract, poster, manuscript) is the expectation.

Jefferson students: This is currently a lottery-based system as we often have more applicants for a single block than we can accommodate. This is done in the interest of fairness to all applicants. Please select your first and second block choices when completing your fourth-year schedule through the registrar.
Non-Jefferson students: Please contact Janice Harper to request a non-Jefferson elective form and she will send you the appropriate paperwork. Please note that we are unable to assign spots until early May, after the Jefferson fourth-year schedules are released. June, September and October offer the greatest degree of flexibilty for scheduling outside students.
