Residents at Bryn Mawr participate in all levels of surgical care of patients and run the general surgical service. The busy elective and emergent, largely bread-and-butter, general surgery operative experience is complimented by several weekly conferences including tumor board, thoracic and breast conferences and M&M.

The surgeons at Bryn Mawr Hospital bring a high level of expertise to a complete scope of general surgery services, including surgical oncology, surgery of the biliary and gastrointestinal tract, breast surgery, vascular surgery, endocrine surgery, minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, access surgery for dialysis, surgery for hyperlipidemia, surgical endoscopy and pediatric surgery.

Bryn Mawr Hospital was established in 1893 by Dr. George S. Gerhard, a local doctor who believed that medical expertise and community care should work hand in hand. With board-certified physicians in a variety of specialties, Methodist trains more residents and students than any other community hospital in the area. Residents participate in a significant number of bread-and-butter elective and emergency general surgery cases as well as vascular cases and actively manage and run the service.

Staff members who are usually on staff at both Jefferson and Methodist teach the residents. The program holds weekly residents conferences and its own morbidity and mortality conferences.

Methodist is a busy, community teaching hospital located at Broad and Wolf Streets in the heart of South Philadelphia and is part of Jefferson University Hospitals. Since 1892, it has provided high-quality care to its community. It offers a range of preventive care, acute inpatient and outpatient services, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and home care.

In partnership with Jefferson, the hospital supports a significant research program that includes such areas as applied science and engineering, as well as developmental biology.

Residents are the most senior team members, who work with and learn from staff surgeons. The senior resident serves as chief of the service performing or assisting in all operative procedures. Weekly conferences round out the didactic schedule.

The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a private, nonprofit, fully accredited teaching hospital with a 70+ year history of caring for children. An operating entity of the Alfred I. duPont Trust, the Institute was founded in 1940 as a hospital for crippled children. For more than four decades, services were primarily orthopaedic. In the 1980s, with the construction of a new, modern facility, the hospital began to expand its mission to serve more children in more ways and now provides a full range of healthcare services for children from birth through age 17.

Situated on the 300-acre Nemours estate, the Institute maintains 128 beds for children with acute, chronic and rehabilitative needs, as well as more than 40 outpatient programs. The staff deals with many highly complex pediatric cases. Hundreds of medical students, residents, fellows, nursing and allied-health students train at the Institute each year.
