Our Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Thomas Jefferson University's Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is committed to promoting and cultivating an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of our faculty, trainees, staff, patients, students, workforce, and the communities we serve. At Jefferson, we are fortunate to be situated in the Greater Philadelphia Area, where many diverse communities and individuals are present, whether to reside, train, work, visit, seek care, or heal. We believe that creating a diverse and inclusive environment is fundamental to our mission for advancing education and health and achieving health equity. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation supports a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee with faculty and resident representation that ensures we honor our commitment to include all cultures, gender identities and sexual orientations, disabilities, races, and ethnicities. Our department embraces and promotes diversity and individual expression of ideas as the foundation of inclusivity. We are fully committed to inclusivity in all aspects of clinical practice, research, training, and service.
- Diversity – the richness of human similarities and differences that make up One Jefferson Family.
- Inclusion – the ability to provide outstanding health care to all people and all communities while giving everyone a voice and the opportunity to be valued, respected, and supported.
- Equity – choosing to provide fairness in how people are treated when seeking healthcare services, employment, development, and community engagement.
Mission Statement
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is committed to promoting equity and inclusion at every level of our practice. We practice value-based medicine, and at the core of this philosophy is the belief that every one of our team members is essential and deserves to feel honored, respected, and supported. We aim to exist in a workplace and learning environment that is free of harassment, discrimination, and microaggressions. We are here to support you and be a resource to help you if concerns arise. We welcome feedback and promote an environment of responsivity, awareness, and openness to change. Please tell us how we can positively impact or improve your work environment, clinical practice, and patient care.
Office of Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives (ODII) at Sidney Kimmel Medical College supports an institutional framework that acknowledges the importance of a diverse community and an inclusive environment. ODII promotes initiatives and programs that increase awareness, understanding, and sensitivity to the needs of all individuals regardless of age, class, physical ability, gender, gender identity, race, religion, and sexual orientation.
Reporting Bias, Discrimination & Harassment
Reporting bias, discrimination, and harassment is essential to creating and maintaining an inclusive culture at Jefferson Enterprise. It provides a platform for individuals to come forward and share their experiences of othering and unfair treatment. By addressing these issues and creating a safe and supportive space for employees to be heard and respected, Jefferson Enterprise can work towards a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine formed a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee to meet its commitment to inclusivity and health equity. The Committee works to honor all cultures, gender identities and sexual orientations, disabilities, races, and ethnicities while promoting diversity and individual expression of ideas.
