Frequently Asked Questions

Our Thomas Jefferson University Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship team is here to answer all of your questions, starting with the frequently asked questions below. Please contact us with any other questions about the program.

How do I submit an application?

Thomas Jefferson University accepts all applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted in any other form will not be reviewed.

How many categorical positions do you expect to offer?

The MFM Fellowship offers two categorical spots each academic year.

Where will I spend most of my time?

The MFM fellows primarily work at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Jefferson OBGYN Outpatient Department. Fellows spend a small portion of their time at Christiana Hospital in Delaware where they work closely with the faculty in the MFM division.

Do you allow moonlighting opportunities for fellows?

Yes, however all moonlighting activities require approval by the Program Director and must occur in accordance with the ACGME Clinical Work and Education Hours requirements. Further, moonlighting activities cannot interfere with fellow responsibilities and performance.

Do you accept applications from graduates of international medical colleges?

Yes, applications from international medical college graduates are accepted. The University sponsors both H-1 and J-1 visas. Clinical experience in the United States withing the last three years is highly recommended.

Is there a requirement for recency of graduation?

A graduation date within the last three years is highly preferred, but not mandatory.

What procedures will I be trained in?

Our fellows receive extensive, hands-on training for a range of procedures to manage high-risk pregnancies, including:

  • Obstetric ultrasound and Doppler
  • Chorionic villus sampling (transabdominal and transvaginal)
  • Amniocentesis
  • Percutaneous umbilical cord sampling and transfusion (PUBS)
  • Fetal procedures (e.g., bladder shunt, thoracocentesis)
  • Cesarean hysterectomy
  • Transabdominal and transvaginal cerclage placement

Where do fellows live?

Our fellows live all over the Philadelphia area with many living in the city and many living in the surrounding suburbs. The city of Philadelphia is among the most walkable cities and has a convenient public transit system. The surrounding Philadelphia suburbs are within a 20-minute commute to Jefferson by car or public transit. Philadelphia allows the flexibility for you to live in an apartment, row home or suburban house with a yard and still be within 20 minutes of the hospital. See Life at Jefferson Housing section to learn more about options.

What kind of research support do fellows have?

Research is a top priority for our MFM division and therefore a top priority for our fellowship training. As part of our commitment to research, we offer robust resources to support our fellows’ research endeavors, including:

  • Research mentorship
  • Scott Memorial Library support for systematic review and meta-analysis
  • REDCap database platform
  • Bio-statistical software
  • Pregnancy-related databases, including cervical length screening, preeclampsia, chronic hypertension, preterm birth
  • Ultrasound database
  • National delivery databases
  • National inpatient sample database
  • MFM Fellow Research Grant awarded annually to one or more fellows.

Are there opportunities for teaching?

Fellows are actively involved in medical student and resident education. Fellows’ teaching opportunities include giving lectures, directing simulation training and, of course, hands-on education through clinical care.

Are there global health opportunities?

Yes, we recognize the importance of training compassionate, well-rounded physicians and encourage our fellows to broaden their training and perspectives through global health opportunities.

What electives are offered during fellowship?

One month is reserved as elective time for fellows to pursue specific areas of interest. In the past, fellows have used this time for sponsored international projects, dedicated fetal echo training and additional research time.

Where do fellows end up after graduation?

We are proud to have one of the nation’s largest, most successful classes of graduating MFM fellows.

What research have fellows published?

Our fellows and faculty are committed to advancing the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine through rigorous research. Compared to other MFM fellowships, our fellows have published in greater numbers, including research that impacts national and international guidelines.
