The Endocrine Fellowship Program at Thomas Jefferson University is a two-year clinical program. Two fellows are selected yearly into our program, and we participate in Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). 

We accept applicants who are currenty in the United States on an H1-B visa and J-1 visa.

Our division offers a large volume and broad range of endocrine pathology to ensure a strong clinical experience. First year fellows rotate through the outpatient clinics at Jefferson and provide inpatient consultations at Jefferson and Methodist hospitals. Second year fellows have more outpatient duties and elective time in subspecialties, such as pediatric endocrine, ultrasonography, radiology and reproductive endocrinology. In the second year, opportunities are available to present abstracts and oral presentations at national endocrine conferences. 

Every week, each fellow has an individual clinic supervised by an attending, protected lecture time, and he or she attends our endocrine forum. Endocrine grand rounds, thyroid conference, neuro-pituitary conference and Philadelphia endocrine society occur on a monthly basis. Sessions with our diabetes educator and technology rounds are also part of the fellowship program. The opportunity to identify an area of interest and work with a mentor is also available.

Duration of Fellowship: 2 years
Number of Fellowship Positions: 2 per year

Curriculum

Clinical training includes patient care, procedures, elective rotations, didactic training and teaching opportunities. Clinical training consists of outpatient clinics at the main center city location, while inpatient training includes Jefferson University Hospital, Hospital of the Neurosciences at Jefferson and Methodist Hospital.

First Year of Fellowship includes on average 9 weeks of inpatient service by each fellow and the rest as outpatient clinics at the main center city location.

Fellows see a wide range of endocrine diseases including diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, thyroid disorders, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, gonadal disorders, and metabolic bone diseases.

Second year of Fellowship includes, in addition to inpatient and outpatient responsibilities:

Elective Rotations, each with average duration of 2-4 weeks, variable based on availability:

1. Thyroid Ultrasound and Biopsy
2. Nuclear Medicine
3. Radiology – DXA readings
4. Pediatrics
5. Reproductive Endocrinology

Didactic Training

Staff endocrinologists perform bedside one-on-one informal teaching in both the inpatient and outpatient settings on daily basis as a key teaching method during fellowship.

Conferences (mandatory for Fellows)

1. Monthly Thyroid Cancer Conference in collaboration with ENT surgeons, radiology, and cyto-pathology departments.
2. Monthly Neuroendocrine Conference in collaboration with Neurosurgery department.
3. Weekly Friday Forum (September to May): faculty and local area endocrinologists discuss interesting cases and review of literature.
4. Weekly review of Literature /Board questions: Every Monday or Thursday
5. Weekly Friday noon Lecture: by faculty or by invited speakers on core curriculum.
6. Monthly Philadelphia Endocrine Society Lectures: from September to May

Research

Mainly clinical and based on the fellow’s initiative. Fellows are encouraged to submit their clinical research and case reports to national endocrine societies.
