Fellows are encouraged to train for and sit for ABIM certification exams in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. Our curriculum reflects our goal to train fellows who are well trained in classical hematology, hematologic malignancies, and solid tumor oncology. The first 18-24 months of training are primarily clinical, with a balance between inpatient and outpatient, between the three disciplines. Most fellows will divided the first 24 months into four six-month blocks. Two six-month inpatient blocks will focus primarily on classical hematology and hematologic malignancies. Two six-month outpatient blocks will focus primarily on solid tumor oncology.  

The inpatient blocks during this time include Hematology Consults (2-4 months), Leukemia (1-2 months), Lymphoma/Myeloma (1-2 months), Blood and Marrow Transplant (1-2 months), Transfusion (0.5-1.0 months), Solid Tumor Consults (one month each year – may be in two-week blocks), as well as an outpatient month of Hemostasis and Thrombosis, and electives.

The outpatient blocks during this time include 4-6 longitudinal clinics, primarily in solid tumor oncology, with one classical hematology or hematologic malignancy session per week.

Electives include Hematopathology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, General Oncology in Center City, Philadelphia, or one of our Advanced Care Hubs (Abington-Jefferson, Jefferson-New Jersey, Jefferson-Northeast, Methodist); specialized months in Women's Health, Thoracic Oncology, GI Oncology, etc.

Fellows who elect a research track will have the second year "front-loaded," to allow them the opportunity to start in the basic science laboratories as early as possible.

Third-year fellows' schedules will vary, depending on their chosen track/career path. Fellows may elect to do clinical, translational, or basic science research, or pursue a more in-depth clinical experience. Fellows who choose a dedicated basic science research track will decrease the continuity clinic experience to one half day per week during the third year.

In addition to longitudinal clinic experiences, all fellows will participate in the multidisciplinary oncology experiences as well.

Throughout the year, fellows will be entirely off duty at least one day out of seven, when averaged over a four-week period. We adhere to the ACGME requirement for an 80-hour work week. There is no in-house overnight call.
