Women's Oncologic Health Group
At The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, in the Department of Medical Oncology, we understand how overwhelming it can be to face a diagnosis of breast or gynecologic cancer. The emotional, physical, and practical challenges can be daunting, and they ripple through every part of a person’s life. That’s why we created the Women’s Oncologic Health Program—not only to treat cancer but to care for every aspect of a patient’s well-being.
We are inviting medical students who are passionate about women’s health and oncology to join us in this critical work. Located at the Jefferson Honickman Center, our program offers comprehensive care to women with or at risk for breast, endometrial, ovarian, vaginal, cervical, and uterine cancers, as well as those at increased genetic risk for these conditions.
By utilizing a Multidisciplinary Team Approach you’ll work alongside world-class specialists in oncology, surgery, genetics, counseling, and palliative care, who are all committed to treating cancer with the latest science while providing holistic, compassionate care. You will also learn Personalized Treatment Plans, because every patient is unique, and we believe that their care should reflect that. You’ll be involved in creating tailored treatment plans, ensuring that our patients are at the center of every decision we make. Compassionate Care is the heart of our program. The belief that cancer care is not just about treatment—it’s about understanding each patient’s needs, fears, and goals. We take the time to listen to their concerns, provide emotional support, and address practical challenges throughout their journey.
By joining our team, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of women navigating one of the most challenging times of their lives. You’ll gain valuable experience working with a diverse team of medical professionals and patients, while also learning how to approach cancer care from a compassionate, patient-centered perspective.
This is your chance to be part of a program that isn’t just about healing cancer but healing the whole person. If you're ready to contribute to an environment where science and empathy intersect, we encourage you to apply.
Together, we can empower women to face cancer with hope, confidence, and the very best care available.
GYN Oncology
Gynecologic oncologists are specialists at the forefront of diagnosing, treating, and managing cancers of the female reproductive system. These cancers, which include those affecting the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva, require a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach. As a gynecologic oncologist, you will utilize a range of cutting-edge treatments—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies—while also playing a vital role in patient education and prevention strategies.
Early detection is critical in gynecologic oncology, and you will be involved in guiding patients through key screening processes such as Pap smears, HPV testing, and other imaging or blood tests to detect potential cancers at their earliest, most treatable stages. In addition to treatment, you will provide crucial supportive care, focusing on managing side effects, preserving fertility when possible, and enhancing the overall quality of life for your patients.
By specializing in gynecologic oncology, you will be at the heart of a dynamic and impactful field that prioritizes both medical expertise and compassionate care. You’ll have the opportunity to transform women’s health, help reduce the burden of cancer and improve the lives of patients at every stage of their journey. If you're passionate about advancing women’s health through innovation, leadership, and care, gynecologic oncology could be the perfect field for you.
Breast Oncology
The Breast Cancer Program at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) is a dynamic and rapidly advancing specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of breast cancer. As a medical student, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside experts in the field, gaining invaluable exposure to the latest research and clinical trials that are transforming patient care.
In this field, you’ll use a wide range of innovative treatments—including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy—to treat and manage breast cancer. You’ll also play a crucial role in early detection through advanced screening techniques such as mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies, which help to identify abnormalities and potential cancers before symptoms emerge.
Breast cancer is not a one-size-fits-all disease. As a specialist, you’ll be trained to address various subtypes, such as hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive, and triple-negative breast cancer. Each subtype requires tailored treatment plans, ensuring that every patient receives the most effective care. Additionally, breast oncology involves cutting-edge research in areas like cancer prevention, precision medicine, and immunotherapy, allowing you to be part of the next wave of innovations in cancer treatment.
The field of breast oncology offers an exciting blend of patient care, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration. It’s a field where you can make a lasting impact on the lives of your patients, helping them navigate treatment, recovery, and survivorship. If you’re passionate about pushing the boundaries of medical science, improving patient outcomes, and working with a diverse team of experts, breast oncology could be the perfect specialty for you.
