Clinical Experiences

A well-rounded clinical experience is vital in the preparation of the emergency physician. Our curriculum was designed to provide an intense clinical experience both in and out of the emergency department to assure the acquisition of the skills needed to practice the specialty. The rotations outside of the ED include the intensive care unit (ICU), pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), coronary care unit (CCU), trauma and trauma intensive care and labor and delivery. These rotations, coupled with the emergency medicine rotations throughout the three year residency, provide the resident with the skills necessary to practice emergency medicine.

Emergency Medicine Experience

The basis of training for the resident is the emergency medicine experience, and it includes both the Emergency Department, as well as the prehospital care setting.

The emergency medicine experience is divided amongst seven hospitals: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; Methodist Hospital; Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital; The A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children; The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Cooper Hospital; and Paoli Hospital.  These seven settings provide the resident with a wide variety of clinical experiences and practice settings. Given that variety is inherent in the field of emergency medicine, this prepares the graduate for practice in practically any environment.

During the PGY-I year, the resident spends fiver months in emergency medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and one month at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children. In the PGY-II and PGY-III years, the resident spends eight months in emergency medicine with approximately 60 percent of this time at Jefferson, 10 percent at Methodist Hospital, 10 percent at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and 10 percent at Paoli Memorial Hospital.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

The home base of Jefferson Emergency Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, located at Jefferson - Center City campus is a Level 1 Trauma Center and has every service and subspecialty you would expect of a nationally recognized academic hospital including comprehensive centers for NCI, Stroke, LVAD, ECMO, Cardiac Emergencies, Trauma, Burn, SCI, and Transplant. Located in the heart of Center City, Jefferson is where you will spend most of your time as a Jefferson EM resident.

Jefferson Methodist Hospital

A resident favorite, Methodist is a community hospital located five miles south of Jefferson - South Philadelphi in the tight-knit South Philly community. Here, you’ll work intimately with attendings as the only resident in the ED and get a feel for the community environment while having the academic powerhouse of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital just a JeffSTAT ride away. The acuity is high, and the patients are sick. You will rotate in the ED as a senior resident and in the ICU as a PGY-1 and PGY-3.

Jefferson Torresdale Hospital

Torresdale is located in North Philly where you’ll do your senior trauma rotation as a PGY-2 (twice). This is a great rotation to grow and stretch your independence as you’ll be the senior trauma resident responsible for covering the entire Trauma Service overnight. You’ll work with some of the nicest Trauma Surgeons you’ll ever meet and have plenty of opportunities to take the lead in the resus bay and managing critically ill patients in the Trauma ICU. Introduced last year, this rotation has quickly become one residents can’t stop talking about.

Mercy Fitzgerald

Mercy Fitzgerald is a busy community hospital located in Darby, PA, approximately 30 min from downtown Philadelphia. You’ll rotate here as a PGY2 and PGY3, get all the critical care procedures and cases as the only EM resident in the department and work alongside seasoned community EM attendings taking care of an underserved suburban community.

Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children

DuPont is Delaware’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Facility. You’ll rotate here as a PGY-1 in the ED and in the PICU. The cases here are a good mix of complex care cases and classic peds EM. You’ll work closely with pediatric EM attendings and fellows.

Paoli Hospital

Located about 45 min from downtown Philadelphia, Paoli is a community hospital and a Level II Trauma Center – the only one for the entire county. Here you’ll learn how practice patterns differ in a high-resource community ED and as the only resident, you’ll have first crack at all procedures and the opportunity to work directly alongside our Jefferson Trauma Surgeons without any other residents present. You’ll rotate here for 1 block during each of your senior years.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Located in West Philly, you’ll rotate Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as a PGY-3. You’ll work in the world renowned Level I pediatric hospital taking care of complex pediatric patients. At CHOP you will also work alongside EM residents from other programs in the city, making this rotation an awesome opportunity to network and meet new friends.

St. Christopher's Hospital for Children

St. Chris is located in North Philly near Temple and Einstein and serves a primarily underserved pediatric population. You’ll rotate here as a PGY-2 and take the lead caring for bread and butter pediatric EM cases.
