I am pleased that you are interested in learning more about the Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine Residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We offer a four-year ACGME accredited residency with 15 residents per year with positions offered to begin in the PGY1 Year (Categorical) or the PGY2/CA1 Year (Advanced). Offering both Categorical and Advanced positions gives flexibility to our applicants and the moderate size of the residency allows us to pay individualized attention to each of our resident physicians.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is the largest teaching hospital in Philadelphia and functions as a major tertiary care referral center, a Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center and the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center for the Delaware Valley. The full spectrum of surgical procedures, including solid organ transplantation and bariatric surgery, and the wide assortment of clinical pathology provide the foundation for comprehensive training in Anesthesiology and its subspecialties. We perform the largest volume of total joint replacements in the area and utilize various regional anesthesia techniques for most of our orthopedic procedures. 

While the majority of the clinical training in Anesthesiology occurs at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the resident experience is further enriched by rotations at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (pediatric anesthesiology), Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (neuroanesthesiology), and Methodist Hospital (community anesthesia, regional anesthesia). An on-campus modern simulation center provides us the opportunity to equip our residents with skills not easily taught or evaluated in the clinical setting.

Although uniformly proud of the training we provide our residents, we believe areas of particular strength include our regional anesthesia experience, neuroanesthesiology, and our Acute Pain Service, which has served as a model for many other hospitals around the world, all of which are among the best in the region. This all occurs in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in which to live in Philadelphia. Many of our resident physicians choose to live near the hospital and are able to enjoy the vibrant restaurants, cultural arts and complete array of professional sports that the urban environment offers while enjoying the intellectual stimulation of training at one of the few universities dedicated exclusively to healthcare education.

The Jefferson Health System cared for more patients with COVID-19 infection than any other hospital system in our area, even during the height of the surge we had the supplies we needed to care for our patients and the personal protective equipment needed to keep our staff as safe as possible while doing so. Our robust didactic program has been successfully converted to an online format. Despite the challenges that the current pandemic may pose for medical education, there has never been a better time to train at Jefferson.
