Anna Flattau, MD, Named Chair of Department of Family & Community Medicine at SKMC

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Anna Flattau, MD, as the next Chair, Department of Family & Community Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, and Vice President for Primary Care Services for Jefferson Health, effective September 20, 2021.

Dr. Flattau currently serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Services and Director of Strategic Development for the Department of Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Health System and as Associate Professor of Family and Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. As Vice Chair, Dr. Flattau provides strategic and operational leadership for the department across primary care, palliative care, hospitalist, and women’s health services, while helping to build unique programs in areas including care of seriously ill patients, homeless health, transgender health, and social determinants of health.

Dr. Flattau is a practicing family doctor with extensive experience working in community health centers and with populations affected by social injustice.  She began her career at Columbia University as medical director of a wound healing program and was subsequently recruited to Montefiore, where she founded and grew a Wound Healing Program across three hospital campuses, provided community-based primary care, and developed a specialized primary care practice within the abdominal transplant center. In recognition of this work, Dr. Flattau was appointed an Innovation Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Dr. Flattau also served as Senior Assistant Vice President at NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest municipal health system, where she was Chief Clinical Officer for Medicaid payment reform initiatives across a network of over 200 partner organizations.

Dr. Flattau completed her undergraduate studies at New York University, her MSc in Health Promotion at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, her MD at Harvard Medical School, her MS in Clinical Research Methodology at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, and her residency in family medicine at Columbia University Medical Center.

I look forward to working with Dr. Flattau as she builds on the work of previous department leaders in advancing the department’s legacy of education and research contributions and, in conjunction with clinical pillar leadership, advances the enterprise-wide primary health care strategy to improve the health of our community. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank George Valko, MD, for his leadership and citizenship as interim chair of the department over the past year, and for his extensive service to the University, medical college and health system. Dr. Valko will continue in his role as the Gustav and Valla Amsterdam Professor and Executive Vice Chair of the department. I wish him all the best as he returns to focusing on the department’s mission of providing high quality primary care to patients and families.
