JCP Improves IPPE Readiness – ASHP Official Podcast
Jackie Wasynczuk, PharmD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, was recently featured on the ASHPOfficial, the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) podcast about JCP's "Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Direct Inpatient Care Skills Fair." In this episode of Educators Essentials, Dr. Wasynczuk speaks about how JCP helped revamp and improve the IPPE readiness for JCP's student pharmacists with a DIRECT INPATIENT CARE SKILLS FAIR. In addition to the required community and hospital pharmacy Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs), the JCP PharmD curriculum also includes ambulatory care, direct patient care, and healthcare service learning rotations during the first 3 years of the program.
Dr. Wasynczuk hopes that by sharing JCP's success in implementing the interactive DIRECT INPATIENT CARE IPPE SKILLS FAIR, student pharmacists are better prepared for their introductory pharmacy practice experiences or IPPEs. Knowing that IPPE-readiness may be a challenge within pharmacy education, especially for the Direct Inpatient Care IPPE, JCP wanted to provide details in this podcast that others within pharmacy education may find ways to ensure success for their students. JCP's skills fair agenda consists of four interactive modules 1) Drug Information and Reference Attribution, 2) Know Your Patient's Surroundings/IPPE Prep Video, and the ICU Simulation Lab, 3) Review of EPIC/Patient Workup/Communication/Chain of Command, and 4) IPPE V Syllabus Review.
After implementing, the DIRECT INPATIENT CARE IPPE SKILLS FAIR and the amount of positive feedback from our student and preceptor surveys, "I have learned," said Dr. Wasynczuk, "that success is through the strong relationships with our practice sites." JCP has found that this skills fair helps to put student pharmacists at ease when they first arrive at their inpatient sites and this experience enables the student pharmacists to be collaborative members of an interprofessional acute care rounding team.
