Vaibhavi Dave

Vaibhavi Dave is in the MS in Real Estate Development program in the College of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Why did you choose Thomas Jefferson University? As I stepped away from my career to pursue further education in real estate, I sought an institution that would challenge me academically while providing a nurturing environment for my transition into the field. The comprehensive curriculum at Jefferson, which balances technical rigor with practical application, captivated my attention. I connected with alums through LinkedIn, and their positive reviews about the faculty's expertise, particularly within the real estate development program, were reassuring. The university's emphasis on real-world projects and connection with alumni network and industry leaders further appealed to me.

However, what truly solidified my decision was a meeting with Dean Barbara Klinkhammer during her visit to India. She kindly invited my friend and me to dinner, and that interaction left a lasting impression. We connected on a level that went beyond academics, and her warmth, genuine interest in my aspirations, and passion for the university created a sense of trust and familiarity. Moving to a different country comes with many challenges, and our connection gave me confidence that Jefferson would be a welcoming and supportive environment.

Additionally, my friend from CEPT University, Surabhi Khanderia, an alumna of Jefferson’s MS in Sustainable Design program, strongly advocated for the program. Jefferson’s scholarship offers and the partnership between Thomas Jefferson University and my alma mater — CEPT University, further aided my decision. These factors made Jefferson stand out, even though I had offers from other institutions.

Where are you from originally? I'm from Gujarat, India.

What is the best part of your studies?  The best part of my studies at Jefferson is the cohort's diversity, which enriches every discussion and offers perspectives from different industries and backgrounds. Additionally, the network I have had access to through the professors has been invaluable — they are leaders in their fields and have been incredibly supportive, both academically and professionally.

Professor Ways has played an important role in my time here, offering continuous guidance and sharing valuable resources at every step. The warmth and openness of the community, coupled with the flexibility to carve out my path, allow me to pursue my unique interests in sustainability and development while still meeting the core academic requirements.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you? I am a partner at Citylabs India, a research and training organization my professor Pratyush Shankar and I started with two other colleagues — dedicated to deepening the understanding of South Asian cities. Through Citylabs we organize workshops, publications, and seminars on critical themes such as Writing Urban Histories, Utopian Imaginations, Urban Mapping and Representation, and Reimagining Urban Infrastructures.

We aim to create a publicly accessible body of work that fosters new ways of perceiving and imagining cities, ultimately contributing to meaningful, gradual change. This experience allows me to integrate real-world insights into my studies, particularly in sustainable and community-driven urban development.

Tell us about a project you're working on or an award/honor you've recently received. I recently received the graduate assistantship award. As a Graduate Assistant, I work with Professor Edgar Stach, Director of the Institute for Smart & Healthy Cities. I'm involved in research and writing focused on the works of Louis Kahn, particularly analysing his architectural philosophy and its manifestation in built environments.

This role has been both intellectually stimulating and deeply rewarding, as it not only allows me to enhance my research skills but also contributes to a significant scholarly publication — an experience that perfectly aligns with my academic and career aspirations.

In addition, this Graduate Assistantship is a scholarship position which has significantly eased my financial burden, especially as an international student. Its support allows me to focus on my research and studies without additional pressure, making this opportunity even more valuable in my journey at Thomas Jefferson University.
