Our division is an integral part of the General Surgery Residency Program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The service maintains a resident complement consisting of one chief resident, two fourth-year residents, one second-year resident, and two to four interns. The interns come from the general surgery program as well as the various surgical specialties such as orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery. Interns from the Emergency Department Residency Program also rotate through the service.
Rounds are made daily on all patients on the service providing opportunities for patient care and bedside teaching. The service does a very high volume of varied surgical procedures assuring residents a rich technical experience. Much of the teaching on the service occurs at morning report where the care plans for all patients are discussed. The trauma floor is managed by an extraordinary group of trauma nurse practitioners.
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) maintains a complement of two fellows, one second-year general surgery resident, and two to four interns as well as a group of dedicated nurse practitioners. The interns in the SICU come from the general surgery program as well as anesthesia, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, obstetrics, and otolaryngology. Extensive multi-disciplinary bedside teaching rounds are made in the SICU daily and the rotation provides a rich technical experience with bedside procedures. The SICU rotation is consistently rated as one of the most educationally valuable programs by our house staff and students.
