Pathology Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the Jefferson Pathology Residency Program! We are excited to get to know you, and hope that our website helps you learn a little more about us. On our Current Residents page, you can learn more about the current trainees, and be sure to check out Our Mission page with our “Day in the Life” videos.

Our residency program utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) in conjunction with Thalamus. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is used to rank and match. Please check with your medical school if you have any questions on how to use these services. No applications will be considered outside of these systems.

To apply to our program, we require that the following be submitted through ERAS:

  • A completed ERAS application form
  • A completed ECFMG certificate, if applicable
  • A Medical Student Performance Evaluation (formerly known as Dean’s Letter)
  • Three additional letters of recommendation (with at least one, but preferably two, from a pathologist)
  • Medical school transcript
  • COMLEX Step 1 (and 2, if available) scores  or USMLE transcript

Residency candidates must be graduates of approved medical schools in the U.S. or Canada, or  have graduated from a non-U.S./non-Canadian medical school and possess a completed ECFMG certificate. Satisfactory references are required. Applications are received and reviewed on a rolling basis until all interview slots are filled. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital does sponsor J1 and H1B Visas.

All interviews will be virtual for the 2025 Match.

The interview process consists of two sessions: the faculty interview day and the resident interactive session.

The Faculty Interview Session

  • Thalamus is used to schedule virtual interviews. Candidates will receive an invitation via Thalamus and will be able choose an interview day and time slot.
  • The virtual interview session consists of a fifteen minute introduction with an Associate Program Director, followed by four 25-minute one-on-one faculty interviews, and a fifteen minute wrap-up with the Program Director.
  • An agenda with interviewer contact information and direct zoom links are sent in advance of the interview date.

The Resident Interactive Session

  • This group session consists of a 60-75 minute virtual meet-and-greet with some of our residents as well as other applicants and provides the opportunity to ask questions about the day-to-day at Jefferson.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to pre-submit questions to the chief residents by way of the program coordinator.
  • Because we consider this session to be valuable and in order for the interview process to be considered complete, candidates must participate in a resident interactive session.

If you have additional questions, please contact our Program Coordinator.
