Research Fellowship Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

Throughout the research year, fellows spend time dedicated to clinical and/or basic science research, coordinate clinical trials and rotate on the otolaryngology service as part of a month-long sub-internship built into the year. Fellows also participate in a weekly educational curriculum that covers how to conduct different types of research, institutional research policies and best practices, as well as presentation and writing resources. Research fellows are also provided a membership to Coursera where they can take additional courses on biostatistics and many other subjects.

Otolaryngology Advanced Elective

The advanced elective gives medical students a sneak peek into the daily workings of the different sub-specialties in otolaryngology. It is designed to prepare students for a smooth transition into their first year of otolaryngology residency by providing a more hands-on approach.

Research Methods: Surgical Specialties Research Consortium

Research fellows have the opportunity to take a Master’s course in the Jefferson College of Life Sciences (JCLS).  This 3-credit hour course fulfills the requirement for elective coursework for the JCLS Graduate Certificate in Human Clinical Investigation.  In this course, research fellows will attend biweekly clinical research education meetings, review online didactic and interactive lectures, covering ambulatory, outpatient and emergent procedures across a variety of surgical subspecialties and attend weekly research conferences. Research fellows will develop skills to recognize current issues in surgical research and develop targeted quality improvement projects aimed at advancing the field of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery.
