Frequently Asked Questions
Our Thomas Jefferson University Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency team is here to answer all of your questions, starting with the frequently asked questions below. Please contact us with any other questions about the program.
How do I submit an application?
Thomas Jefferson University accepts all applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted in any other form will not be reviewed.
How many categorical positions do you expect to offer?
During the 2024 recruitment cycle the OBGYN Residency will offer five categorical spots for PGY1* residents. The program does not offer preliminary positions.
*The program will make exceptions to recruit PGY2 residents, as needed.
Where will I spend most of my time?
The OBGYN Residency uses numerous clinical settings throughout the Jefferson Health System in order to give our house-staff the most diverse educational experience.
House officers will spend time in the following sites: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Thomas Jefferson OBGYN Outpatient Office, various Thomas Jefferson University affiliated subspecialty practices and Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.
Do you allow moonlighting opportunities for residents?
Opportunities for moonlighting are available at Methodist Hospital for chief residents. All moonlighting activities require approval by the Program Director and must occur in accordance with the ACGME Clinical Work and Education Hours requirements. Further, moonlighting activities cannot interfere with resident responsibilities and performance.
Are there USMLE score requirements?
While USMLE scores* are an important factor in our selection process, there are no official score requirements to apply to the program.

Do you accept applications from graduates of international medical colleges?
Yes, applications from international medical college graduates are accepted. The University sponsors both H-1 and J-1 visas. Recent clinical experience in the United States is highly recommended and a graduation date within the past three years is highly preferred.
How is the schedule made?
The resident rotation schedule is developed by the Program Director with input from the administrative chief residents. Resident requests are incorporated into the development of the rotation schedule as appropriate, accounting for vacation requests, interviews and required testing.

How is abortion training at TJUH affected by the Dobbs decision?
TJUH OB/GYN believes that abortion is an essential part of reproductive healthcare and remains committed to abortion training. In Pennsylvania, abortion remains legal up to 23 weeks and 6 days and residents continue to engage in routine abortion training, learning procedural and medication abortions in the first and second trimesters.
How can individual residents give feedback to the program?
Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on their training experience on an ongoing basis. Residents can provide feedback during weekly education division meetings, scheduled residency business meetings and via the resident suggestion box. Annually, all residents and faculty are required to provide anonymous feedback for the Program Evaluation Committee Meeting. Feedback received during this process is used to help make improvement and changes to the structure of the residency training.
How does the resident evaluation process work?
Designated faculty members complete rotation evaluations for each resident at the conclusion of every scheduled rotation. These evaluations are compiled using composite information provided by faculty who have worked with the resident during the rotation.
