The PhD Program in Molecular Physiology and Translational Medicine (MPTM) employs a multidisciplinary approach to train students in the rigors of experimental biomedical sciences and to prepare them for independent research careers, with major foci in blood, cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology. With these foci, our program is designed to train the next generation of scientific leaders in research reflecting the most pressing clinical problems worldwide.

Program Overview

The PhD Program in Molecular Physiology and Translational Medicine trains students in holistic approaches to biomedical research, preparing students for careers across the spectrum of the cutting-edge world of biomedical and translational research. Our research programs merge mechanistic studies in cell and molecular biology with cell, tissue, organ, and system physiology and pathophysiology. The main themes of the program are in blood, cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, and many of the faculty are drawn from the Cardeza Foundation – Division of Hematology, and the Center for Translational Medicine, of the Department of Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. However, the program includes faculty from across many academic departments, divisions and research centers across Jefferson, whose research interests encompass a broad array of basic and translational topics and model systems including cellular and molecular physiology, and normal and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems.

Applicants with an interest in neurophysiology should refer to our PhD program in Neuroscience.
