Advisory Board

The mission of the Center for the Preservation of Modernism is to advocate for the appreciation, conservation and stewardship of modern buildings and sites through research, publications, and educational programming. Composed of nationally and internationally recognized leaders in the preservation field, Advisory Board members guide the Center’s advocacy initiatives, providing their unique perspectives, considerable experience, insight, and advice. Members also support the Jefferson MS in Historic Preservation program by supporting scholarships, facilitating student internships and mentoring thesis students.

Jennifer M. Arnoldi, AIA

Jennifer Arnoldi, a long-time Philadelphia resident and Associate at M+Sa, manages diverse and complex civic and cultural projects for the firm. She has completed a range of restoration planning and documentation projects, prepared National Register of Historic Places nominations, and managed documentation and approvals for Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit projects. Early in her career, Jennifer was introduced to the important oeuvre of the modern architect William Lescaze when she designed the restoration of the studio and residence built in 1933 for Roy Spreter in Gladwyne, PA. Modern structures present valuable opportunities and challenges as rehabilitation and preservation projects in M+Sa’s portfolio and in Jennifer’s current work. She holds a BA in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a M.Arch from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Jennifer also serves as president of the Friends of Inn Yard Park .

Robert A. Douglass holds degrees from the University of Miami, where he was awarded the 2010 Henry Adams Medal for academic excellence in architecture, and from Haverford College. Rob is VMA’s first Certified Passive House Designer, a position in line with his personal commitment to sustainability and his role providing executive leadership over the firm’s sustainable pursuits. He is driven to design campus environments that positively shape student outcomes, especially for young children, and brings a deep knowledge of different pedagogical models and their expression through architecture. Rob has also developed a deep appreciation for historic buildings through his work with St. George’s School, Yale University, and others to make their older buildings both more sustainable and more responsive to contemporary student needs.

Theodore Prudon, FAIA, FAPT, FoIFI, BNADr.

Theodore Prudon is an internationally renowned architect, preservation expert, architectural engineer, author, and educator. He a leading expert on the preservation of modern architecture and a practicing architect in New York City. Dr. Prudon worked on the terra cotta restoration of the Woolworth Building, the exterior restoration of the Chrysler Building, and a 1941 Lescaze townhouse in Manhattan. He is the recipient of a Graham Foundation Individual grant for his book Preservation of Modern Architecture, which is a foundational text and a significant contribution to the subject. Prudon continues to teach, dividing his time between Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation where he is an Associate Professor, and as Professor at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture, Graduate Program for Historic Preservation.

Nina Rappaport

Nina Rappaport is an architectural critic, curator, and educator. She is publications director at Yale School of Architecture and editor of the biannual publication Constructs. Her books include Vertical Urban Factory (Actar,2020), Ezra Stoller: Photographer with co-editor Erica Stoller (Yale University Press, 2012) and Support and Resist: Structural Engineers and Design Innovation (The Monacelli Press, 2007). She has contributed essays to Architecture, Architectural Record, Praxis, Perspecta, Scapes, Metropolis, Future Anterior, and Tec21. Nina has taught seminars and studios on urban theory and industrial urbanism at Syracuse New York City, Barnard College, Parsons School of Design and Yale School of Architecture. She was a Design Trust for Public Space Fellow and co-author of the book, Long Island City: Connecting the Arts (Episode Books, 2006). Nina is a founder of Docomomo-New York/Tri-State and currently its Vice President.

Simona Salvo, Architect, PhD in Architectural Conservation

Simona Salvo focuses on theoretical and methodological aspects related to architectural conservation, particularly emphasizing modern architecture, and on the dissemination of restoration principles and theories within today's globalized cultural context. She plays a pivotal role in fostering cultural, scientific, and academic cooperation on an international scale, collaborating with numerous academic institutions across Europe, China, the US, and Brazil. Her contributions are not only as a visiting professor but also as a member of research teams involved in national and international projects. Dr. Salvo participates in conferences, seminars, and workshops dedicated to architectural conservation, with a particular emphasis on modern and contemporary architectural heritage. 

Paul Savidge, JD

Paul Savidge is Chief Legal Officer at Spark Therapeutics, a leading gene therapy company headquartered in Philadelphia. In this role, Paul leads the legal and compliance organizations at Spark, which is a member of the Roche Group of companies. Paul graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law and holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BSFS from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. Paul is a staunch advocate for the preservation of mid-century modern residences. Paul and his husband own and oversaw the conservation of Louis Kahn’s iconic Margaret Esherick House, located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. He sits on the board of the Wharton Esherick Museum and on the curatorial committee of the Reading Public Museum

Michael Schade, AIA LEED AP BD+C

Mike Schade has been involved in a wide range of project types over his career, focusing on higher education, cultural institutions, and religious projects. Significant projects include the Anne d’Harnoncourt Sculpture Garden at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, renovations to Temple Adath Israel in Merion Station, PA, and renovations to the Louis Kahn-designed Richards Medical Research Labs at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives with his wife in Center City Philadelphia and is involved with the Center City Resident’s Association, his local civic organization.

Kelly Sutherlin McCleod founded her eponymous architectural practice in 1988. KSMA’s design for new construction, adaptive reuse and preservation encompasses institutional, commercial, residential and cultural projects. KSMA has served as project architect for preservation projects for many of the most important 20th century design masterworks in Southern California. A nationally recognized leader in the preservation of modern architectural resources, Kelly promotes awareness and understanding of the conservation of culture, tradition and place through her professional, personal, and public advocacy. The work of KSMA has been recognized by the AIA, the California Office of Historic Preservation, DoCoMoMo, CPF, LA Conservancy, the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, and cities throughout California.
