The Architecture program at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for graduate assistants for the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Chris Harnish on “Advanced Health Infrastructure in Healthy and Resilient African Cities”.

The research will focus on the research and design concepts for health infrastructure in LMIC settings, particularly Malawi. Ongoing TJU collaborations with the Republic of Malawi Ministry of Health(MOH), the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), and the Heart for Malawi International(H4MI) NGO will be the particular areas of study. TJU is the primary partner in research and design projects with each organization. With the Malawi MOH TJU is collaborating on the development of Health Infrastructure Design Guidelines. With KUHeS TJU is advising on the planning of the first pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the country. With H4MI TJU is planning the first Cardiothoracic Surgical Center in the country. Each endeavor includes research on efficient care models, evidence-based design methodologies, and resilient design amidst climate crisis.

The Construction Management program is inviting applications for graduate assistants for the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Mawlana on Collecting and Processing Point Could Data of the Built environment.

The research will focus on point cloud processing of the built environment. The work involves data acquisition, registration, filtering, segmentation, 3D reconstruction, and visualization. The student will also receive training on LIDAR and data collection.  

The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences, College of Life Sciences, East Falls Campus, at Thomas Jefferson University, invites applications for graduate assistants starting in Fall 2024.  The student will have the opportunity to work under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department and become a member of their research team.  The research interests of the faculty represent a broad spectrum of laboratory-based and field-based studies, from fundamental to applied chemistry and biochemistry, and from molecular to behavioral biology, including lab-bench based as well as computational approaches.  Interested students will be matched with faculty based upon availability of research projects and the education and training interests and career goals of the student.

The MS Industrial Design at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for graduate assistants starting in the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Tod Corlett on new applications of 3D printing and scanning.

The research will focus on developing new ways to support the design process by scanning 3D models and mockups, and printing product prototype parts. The student will also receive training on 3D scanners and multiple 3D printing technologies, such as filament, laser sintering, and resin printing, and associated techniques such as pressure injection casting, and will be asked to develop a personal project as part of this research.  

The Engineering and Technical Textiles programs at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for graduate assistants for the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Prof. B. George on creation of yarn spinning equipment by 3D printing.

The research will focus on attempting to create small scale yarn spinning equipment, to include carding, drawing, rotor spinning, and ring spinning, by 3D printing, using university 3D printers.   Success will be measured by how effectively the equipment works in producing carded sliver, drawn sliver, and yarn.  The student will also receive training on 3D printing and work with various faculty designing equipment via CAD drawing and then printing parts, assembling equipment, and testing them.

The Department of Marketing at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for the graduate assistantship position for Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Ryan E. Cruz, Assistant Professor of Marketing on Consumer Behavior & Decision-Making Research.

The assistantship requires active participation in faculty-sponsored research. Graduate assistants will be exposed to and receive training in primary and secondary consumer research methodologies. Graduate Assistants may be tasked with duties such as but not limited to: conducting library and secondary research, performing literature reviews, collecting primary and secondary data, data-entry, and/or quantitative and qualitative survey data analysis (including qualitative coding) on faculty-led research topics related to consumer behavior, consumer decision making, and marketing-communications.

The Undergraduate Business Program at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for graduate assistants for the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Irina Stoyneva on “Standing Out From the Crowd or Blending In It: Name Choice as a Strategy for Success”

The research will focus on analyzing name choices of entrepreneurial firms in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry and understanding the driving forces behind these choices. The project will focus on building a dataset of the names of all firms that have launched their business from 2000 till 2023, analyzing the naming patterns during that period and identifying specific name choice strategies pursued by the start-ups. The student will also receive training in qualitative research methodology, data mining, inductive reasoning and the process of developing a grounded theory.

The Textile Design M.S. at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for graduate assistants starting in the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Professor Marcia Weiss on Textile Design Marketing Strategies.

The research will focus on advancing innovation in and scope of market-facing processes to promote textile design to a broad audience.  This will involve evaluating best practices undertaken by peer and aspirational institutions to effectively market and recruit design undergraduates, with consideration of associate’s degree institutions for possible articulation agreements. The graduate assistant will partner with faculty in the development, management, and promotion of content and digital assets that expand global access and understanding of textile design as a vibrant and wide-ranging career.  The student will receive training on textile design as an undergraduate curriculum and the inherent career paths. 

The Master of Urban Design – Future Cities program at TJU is inviting applications for graduate assistants for the Fall 2024 term. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Peng Du on Modeling Environmental Performance of the Evolving Urban Streets and Open Spaces in Philadelphia.

High quality outdoor spaces in dense cities have been found to benefit human well-being and health, but have existing urban streets and public spaces performed well for people’s health, and will they continue to perform well with the ever-changing urban construction and microclimatic conditions? Many studies have examined the performance of urban public spaces influenced by the construction and operation of buildings and transportations. However, very few monitored the changing performance of these spaces, as affected by the increased number and scale of buildings, and traffics as well as the decreased vegetations within a long period of time, paired with the associated urban policies. Therefore, this research will use Philadelphia as a case study, model the changing forms and programs of the downtown areas in the past 20 years, especially those that have a large number of tall buildings, and examine the performance of the urban streets and open spaces. The results will also be evaluated with the associated urban design policies at the same times, so that the research will reveal both positive and negative impacts of the historical urban developments and policies on the urban public spaces. The student will also receive training on the environmental performance modeling, geospatial technologies, urban analytics and research report writing.

The Institute for Smart and Healthy Cities (JeffSmart) at Thomas Jefferson University invites applications for graduate assistants starting Fall 2024. The student will work under the supervision of Professor Edgar Stach PhD on versus projects at JeffSmart.

The research will focus on maintaining and expanding the JeffSmart website, produce social media entries, press enouncements, and short promotion videos about the institute’s activities. The Graduate Student will assist in organizing the first JeffSmart Hackathon - Creative Ideation Workshop and assist in the administration of the institute. The institute planes an exhibit at DesignPhiladelphia 2024. The Graduate student will support JeffSmart faculty at this and other the events.

The student will support the varies activities of the institute. The student will work on the institute’s web site, events planning, and social media writing.

To work in Institute for Smart and Healthy Cities will greatly enhance the web design technical skills, critical thinking, writing, and professional communication skills of the Graduate Student Assistant.
