Our Division offers surgical treatment for a wide array of diseases and disorders including those affecting the breast, digestive tract, liver, pancreas, skin and thyroid. We proudly continue the legacy of leadership and commitment to excellence established by the famed surgeons and former chairs who have led the department through history.
Today our general surgeons are continuously fine-tuning surgical techniques and offering less-invasive options. Our surgeons are among the pioneers in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques. We have had important success in esophagectomies, liver resections, surgery for obesity, lumpectomies for breast cancer, and various procedures for disorders of the pancreas and biliary tract – most notably the mini-Whipple procedure and robotic-assisted distal pancreatectomy.
Research is a critical mission of the department faculty and the general surgeons are no exception. Our general surgeons are involved in an impressive array of clinical trials and work closely with faculty in the Division of Surgical Research on basic science research ranging from identifying novel early detection markers for pancreatic cancer to understanding mRNA instability in tumors.
