Research & Clinical Interests
Musculoskeletal diseases are among the most common causes of pain and physical disability. There is a shortage of rheumatologists worldwide. Dr. Meltzer, along with several international rheumatologists, formed Rheumatology for All (RFA)in 2016. This is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase access to rheumatology care in resource limited areas. RFA has already sponsored two internists from Ethiopia who have completed a fellowship in rheumatology in Durban, South Africa. These physicians are already providing care and teaching rheumatology in Ethiopia. The goal is to develop self-sustaining rheumatology programs. RFA will sponsor a pediatrician from Ethiopia and an internist from Rwanda for fellowship training. In addition, RFA provides rheumatology training virtually, for now, for the medical residents at the University of Rwanda.
