Biography

Dr. Byron Scott is a physician leader with over 30 years of healthcare industry experience.  He now serves as an advisor, consultant, and educator in healthcare.  A board-certified emergency medicine physician, he has expertise in quality, health equity, physician leadership, and governance.

He previously was Deputy Chief Health Officer at IBM Watson Health and Associate Chief Medical Officer at Truven Health Analytics, prior to acquisition by IBM.  He also worked for EmCare, a physician practice management company, for over 20 years in various leadership, executive, and clinical roles.  He practiced emergency medicine for 25 years, including 2 years as a faculty member at Orlando Regional Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

He now serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for Direct Relief, a global humanitarian disaster relief agency where he also Co-Chairs the $75 million Fund for Health Equity. He is a Board Trustee for Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego where he also serves on the Quality committee.  He serves on the Board of Directors for Providence Health Plan and chairs the Quality committee.  He serves on the Board of Directors for Accuray, a publicly traded medical device company that manufactures Radiotherapy systems for Cancer.  He previously was a board member for the American Association for Physician Leadership (2017-2021) and the Richardson Hospital Authority (2001-2005).

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  He completed his emergency medicine residency and administrative fellowship at Orlando Regional Medical Center.  He is certified in Healthcare Quality Management.  He is Directorship Certified by the National Association for Corporate Directors, including a Cybersecurity Oversight Certification. 

He is an Editorial Board member of the American Health and Drug Benefits Journal.  He is an active thought leader in healthcare with public speaking and publications.
