Biography
Jose L. Gonzalez MD, was Vice President, Community Health for the Center for Children’s Health at Cook Children’s Health Care System in Fort Worth, Texas until January 2019. He initially joined Cook Children’s in January 2012 as Vice President, Clinical Affairs for their Managed Care Health Plan. During hia years at Cook Children’s, he completed his masters in Healthcare Quality & Safety Management, and Population Health at JCPH.
Dr. Gonzalez attended medical school at the University of Miami where he completed a pediatrics residency, including a year as Chief Resident, at UTHSC-Southwestern in Dallas; and a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at University of Iowa. Upon completion, he settled in Texas to practice community pediatric endocrinology, while also involved in clinical growth hormone therapy, diabetes care and prevention research, as well as in office-based resident and medical student education. In 1994, he joined the faculty at UTHSC-Southwestern as Director of its pediatric endocrinology outpatient clinic. Subsequently, he transitioned to Scott &White/Texas A&M School of Medicine where he served as Director of Pediatric Endocrinology and Pediatric Medical Education. In 2002 he transferred to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston to become their Vice Chair for Pediatric Medical Education. During these academic years, he obtained a JD from SMU School of Law and a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Southern California. In 2008, Dr. Gonzalez went to work for Texas’ Health and Human Services Commission as Medical Director for the Medicaid-SCHIP programs overseeing development and implementation of clinical policies and regulations.
Since his recent retirement, he has enjoyed spending time with family and multiple pets while still maintaining active contact with the world of healthcare by providing consulting services in quality and community-centered care. He recently held the position of interim CMO for a large public Health Plan in Dallas, Texas. His joys and interests focus on teaching and learning and traveling, tent camping and hiking, and discovering new California and Oregon red wines.
