Overall research interest of the Ibrahim lab is to understand the role of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and their contribution to the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and to investigate the mechanistic regulation of RNA lifecycle in health and disease. ALS is a devastating neurodegenerative disease with no current cure. The overarching goal of our research program is to identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Applying a multidisciplinary approach including molecular biology, RNA biology, biochemistry, computational biology, and advanced next-generation sequencing methods, we aim to investigate how dysregulation of RNA metabolism contributes to ALS pathogenesis, and understand the molecular mechanism of a fundamental and novel biological process of RNA decay “ribothrypsis”.
