Focus Areas

Barbara Reale, DNP, CNM, FACNM is an Assistant Professor and the program director of the Institute of Midwifery at Thomas Jefferson University. Formerly, she was an Advanced Senior Lecturer in the Nurse-Midwifery Program at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing. She has practiced midwifery since 1989, in a variety of settings, including a free-standing birth center, as Clinical Director of an adolescent health center, in private practice at a community hospital and in at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She has been clinical preceptor for midwifery students since 1991, Family Practice residents since 2001, and OB/GYN residents since 2014. Barbara has a post-master’s certification in Teacher Education, and was a Fulbright Scholar in 2009, focusing on Midwifery Teacher Education in Trinidad and Tobago. Barbara holds a BA in Government from Cornell University, a BSN from Columbia University, and an MSN and DNP from the University of Pennsylvania. She has received the ACNM Excellence in Teaching Award and Regional Award for Excellence, and served as the Education Section Chair for the American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Global Health. She served 5 years as a member of the NJ Board of Medical Examiners Nurse-Midwifery Liaison Committee and for many years on the Legislative Committee of the NJ Affiliate of the ACNM. Her areas of interest include the use of simulation, shoulder dystocia, normal labor and birth, group prenatal care, and interprofessional education.
