Biography

Dr. Dawson-Fend graduated with her Master of Arts in Community Counseling at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2008. She earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Texas Tech University in 2014. Laura is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and has spent much of her career working within underserved settings including rural communities, with severe and persistent mental illness, juvenile justice centers or working in medical clinics addressing the intersection of mental health, addictions, and homelessness. Dr. Dawson-Fend is currently an Assistant Professor and core faculty member with the Community and Trauma Counseling program at Thomas Jefferson University. Laura has published on issues such as Veterans Transitioning to the University campus, Rape Culture, and Technology Assisted Distance Supervision and is in the process of getting a chapter on Intersectional Feminist approaches to Crisis and Trauma.

Research Projects in Progress

Dr. Dawson-Fend is interested in continuing to research in the areas of trauma, crisis, human trafficking, effective models for working with law enforcement to prevent burnout and PTSD and working on the gap between what we know about trauma and effective interventions to treat and prevent trauma. Doctor Dawson-Fend is also working on a chapter about feminist techniques to use when working with those in crisis or experiencing trauma for a textbook.

Mentoring

Doctor Dawson-Fend is actively mentoring CTC adjunct professors and graduate students in counseling, counselor education and supervision. One example of her mentorship involves her inclusion of her graduate assistant at ENMU in a collaboration with counseling faculty from two other universities on a journal article.

Supervision

Dr. Dawson-Fend has taken the following formal educational and clinical courses to be prepared to serve as a clinical supervisor to mental health professionals and trainees in counseling. Additionally, Laura is a licensed counseling supervisor in Texas and can serve as a post master’s or doctoral supervisor there.

Relevant Courses Taken

Dr. Dawson-Fend has taken courses in clinical mental health counseling, addictions, community mental health, supervision, consultation, social and cultural concerns in addition to classes in statistics and research. Dr. Dawson-Fend has also taken continuing education in trauma, dissociation, motivational interviewing, addiction treatment, and experiential play therapy.

Advising

Doctor Dawson-Fend advises 10-12 first year counseling graduate students, 7 to 8 second year masters students and a few part-time students. Laura will continue to maintain an active advising caseload as long as she is a member of the TJU faculty.
