The Malawi Studio Wins Prize for Project Focusing on Resilient Healthcare Infrastructures in Low-Resource Settings
Congratulations to Professor Chris Harnish and the fifth year B.Arch studio, who were recently awarded a portion of the $25,000 Studio Prize by the American Institute of Architects. Students conducted five weeks of intense, quantitative and qualitative research to understand issues facing the health care sector in Malawi. The research included direct collaboration with medical professionals, faculty and students from Jefferson's Sidney Kimmel Medical College and College of Population Health, and the Malawian stakeholders to inform their design proposals. Using the resulting data, they developed detailed design solutions to specific challenges such as an increasing demand for pediatric care in rural areas and how to respond safely and effectively to traffic accidents in congested cities.
